GoPro telemetry overlay

GoPro cameras from the HERO5 onwards record GPS, speed and accelerometer data into a hidden GPMF track inside the MP4. TrackHero reads that track directly, so you can drop a GoPro file in on its own and get a speed and G-force overlay with no separate GPS logger. It is free, runs in desktop Chrome, and nothing is uploaded.

The data is already in the file

Every GoPro from the HERO5 onwards writes a GPMF track into the MP4 alongside the video and audio. It carries GPS position and speed, altitude, and accelerometer and gyroscope samples, timestamped against the footage. A normal video player ignores it entirely, which is why most people never realise it is there.

Because the telemetry and the video came out of the same camera at the same time, they are already in sync. Drop a GoPro file into TrackHero on its own and you get a speed gauge and a G-force plot with no logger, no export step and no manual alignment.

The HERO12 Black is the one to watch. GoPro dropped GPS from that generation to extend battery life, then restored it for the HERO13. If you shoot on a HERO12, the camera has no position data to give, and you will need a GPS logger and a .vbo file instead.

Getting usable data

GPS has to be enabled, and the camera has to actually acquire a lock:

On a HERO11, open Settings and toggle GPS on. On a HERO9 or HERO10, it is under Regional. The Quik app can toggle it too.
Power the camera on with the Power button, not by pressing Record. Starting a recording immediately can begin the clip before a fix is acquired.
Give it a clear view of the sky. Mounted low behind a roll cage, or facing down, the fix will be poor or absent.

If a clip has no telemetry, the overlay has nothing to draw and the gauges stay empty. Checking one file before a full track day is cheaper than discovering it afterwards.

Adding lap times

Embedded GoPro telemetry gives speed and G-force, but the camera knows nothing about the circuit, so it cannot produce lap times. For a live lap delta and a lap overview, load a .vbo from a GPS logger alongside the video: a RaceChrono export, a VBOX session, or a Dragy export. TrackHero will use the logger for lap timing and the video for everything else.

Requirements

TrackHero needs Chrome on a desktop computer. In return there is no installation, no account, no watermark, and no upload. The video is decoded, composited and re-encoded entirely on your own machine.

Frequently asked questions

Which GoPro models record GPS?

HERO5 Black through HERO11 Black, plus MAX and Fusion, and the HERO13. The HERO12 Black is the exception: GoPro removed GPS from it to extend battery life and brought it back for the HERO13. If you shoot on a HERO12 you will need a separate GPS logger and a .vbo file.

Why is there no GPS data in my GoPro file?

The usual causes are that GPS was switched off in the camera settings, that the camera never got a satellite lock before recording started, or that the camera is a HERO12 Black, which has no GPS at all. Power the camera on with the Power button rather than by hitting Record, and give it a moment with a clear view of the sky before you start.

Do I need a GPS logger as well?

No. A GoPro file alone is enough for speed and G-force. You would only add a .vbo from a dedicated logger if you want lap timing and lap deltas, or if you want a higher-rate speed trace than the camera provides.

What is GPMF?

GPMF is GoPro's metadata format. It is a timed data track stored alongside the video and audio inside the MP4, carrying GPS position, speed, altitude, accelerometer and gyroscope samples. It is invisible in a normal video player, which is why a tool has to be told to look for it.
