TrackHero vs Telemetry Overlay
Telemetry Overlay, from GoPro Telemetry Extractor, is a $199 desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux that reads an unusually wide range of loggers and cameras across many sports. TrackHero is free, runs in desktop Chrome with no install, and focuses only on track-day video from .vbo files and GoPro telemetry. Choose Telemetry Overlay for breadth; choose TrackHero if your data is already VBO or GoPro and you would rather not pay or install anything.
Two different products
Telemetry Overlay is the broadest tool in this space. It reads GPS and sensor data from AiM, Alfano, RaceCapture, RaceChrono, RaceBox, VBOX and more, extracts telemetry directly from GoPro, Insta360 and DJI Osmo Action cameras, and covers cycling, aviation, drones, sailing, skiing and crash reconstruction as well as motorsport. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and costs $199 as a one-off.
TrackHero does one of those things. It takes a track-day GPS session and onboard video and renders a motorsport overlay, for free, in a browser.

When Telemetry Overlay is worth the $199
If any of these apply, pay for it:
- Your logger is an AiM, Alfano, RaceCapture, RaceBox or similar unit that TrackHero does not read.
- You shoot on Insta360 or DJI rather than GoPro.
- You want overlays for something other than motorsport: a cycling climb, a flight, a ski run.
- You are on macOS or Linux, or you do not want to be tied to Chrome.
- You need deep customisation of gauge design and layout.
It is a mature, actively developed product, and for a wide workflow it earns its price.
When TrackHero is the better fit
- Your data is already a
.vbofrom RaceChrono, VBOX or Dragy, or telemetry inside a GoPro file. - You want a finished video today, without a purchase decision or an installer.
- You are on a machine where you cannot install software.
- You do a handful of track days a year and $199 is hard to justify against the number of videos you will actually make.
The honest limitation
TrackHero needs Chrome on desktop. Safari, Firefox and mobile browsers cannot run the encoding pipeline. Telemetry Overlay, as a native application, has no such restriction and will keep working regardless of what any browser vendor does.
If breadth of device support is what you need, Telemetry Overlay is simply the better tool and it would be dishonest to argue otherwise. TrackHero’s case is narrower: for the specific job of putting VBO or GoPro data onto track footage, it does it for free and without installing anything.
