Can dragy·Lap overlay video by itself?

Yes. It records with the phone cameras and can overlay a speedometer, lap time and a 3D map, and it can import GoPro or DJI Osmo Action footage and sync it to the logged data. For a quick clip straight off the phone it is convenient.

Why render in TrackHero instead?

For a live lap delta against your session best, a lap overview with outlap and inlap markers, export up to 4K capped at your source, exporting only a lap range, or overlaying data onto footage from a camera the phone never saw. Desktop rendering also does not tie up your phone or its battery.

Do I need a Dragy unit to use TrackHero?

No. TrackHero reads any .vbo file, so RaceChrono, VBOX and Dragy exports all work, and a GoPro from the HERO5 onwards carries its own telemetry with no logger at all.

That is the sensible workflow. Use the Dragy unit and app for logging and instant on-phone review, then export the session as a .vbo and render the version you actually publish in TrackHero.

What the desktop buys you

Rendering off the phone gets you a few things the app cannot offer:

A live lap delta. A running comparison against your own best lap in the session, green when you are up and red when you are down, is the single most useful thing to have on screen when reviewing your driving.
A lap overview. Your last four laps at a glance, with outlap and inlap badges and your fastest highlighted.
Higher-resolution output. Up to 4K, capped at your source video so it never upscales.
Partial exports. Render one good lap instead of a forty-minute session.
Overlay-only output. If you have a .vbo but no footage yet, export the overlay alone as a transparent-matte pair and composite it in an editor later.
Your phone stays free. Long renders on a phone are slow and drain the battery.

What the phone buys you

Immediacy. Being able to watch a lap back in the paddock, five minutes after the session, is genuinely valuable and no desktop workflow competes with it. The Dragy hardware is also a properly accurate logger: the DRG70 and Dragy Pro sample at 25 Hz.

Using them together

The obvious workflow is to use both: log and review on the phone during the day, then export the session as a .vbo and render the video you actually want to share in TrackHero afterwards.

TrackHero is not tied to Dragy, either. It reads .vbo files from RaceChrono and VBOX Motorsport just as happily, and can pull telemetry straight out of GoPro footage with no logger involved.

The limitation

TrackHero requires desktop Chrome. It is not a phone app and is not trying to be one. If you want everything to happen on the device that recorded it, dragy·Lap is the right tool and TrackHero is not.
